   The pacing and phrasing seem fine, as far as one can tell, and there's a nice spring in the step of the last movement, so more's the pity that the sound does it all less than justice. I own a good bit of studio Klemperer -- Mahler, Brahms, some Beethoven and Bruckner -- /5(30).

   On this budget 10 CD boxed set, the first six discs contain the Beethoven symphonies and the Overtures to Egmont, Coriolanus and Creatures of Prometheus are played by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Otto Klemperer, , recorded live in May/June /5(25).

   When the Beethoven and Brahms-Symphonies on this CD-Box were recorded, Otto Klemperer ( - ) was already the last "great old man" from the ranks of European conductors who dramatically influenced the artistic life on both sides of the Atlantic beyond the middle of the 20th century.

   Edward Greenfield wrote in Gramophone about Klemperer’s Brahms Symphony No.2 studio recording in ‘There is no question in my mind that this is the greatest, the most revealing Brahms 2nd ever recorded’. According to Richard Osborne, the November live account is even better.
